A slow slog to a new creation

At this time last year I was in Scotland gathering material to make new work. After a severe case of artists block, and then a following glut of too many ideas, I have finally started to make the new work I was hoping for in my last post. As has been true for me most of my life Spring seems to inspire me to create. One of the first experiences we had on our trip was hitting a pot hole on a very rural road and getting 2 flat tires. Because we were so far out in the country phone service was very spotty. To get in touch with the tow company that had our rental car I had to climb to the top of a hill in the rain and sit on hold for a long time. I was of course pissed off at the situation and feeling kind of miserable and negative about the whole trip. While I was standing there I started looking at the plant life in the fields around me and saw a fern coming up out of the ground. That was the first moment I felt like I was developing an idea. How I mix my slip.

I spent the weekend house cleaning, making up for the last three months of frenzied sculpting. It was amazing how much of the contents of my studio had become scattered throughout my house. Everything is back in place now, which feels freeing. On top of all the cleaning I managed to make time to mix myself a double batch of casting slip to get ready for another round of slip casting tableware. I got another check in the mail yesterday from one of my galleries and it made me realize that I really need to get some more work out. (I like that extra money coming in.) Since I mixed the slip I thought I would let you know how I make my casting slip. I got the recipe several years ago from Ceramics Monthly (November 2008, p.57). In case you can't read this it says: UARTS CLAY BODY Nepheline Syenite ............................23% Grolleg (English Kaolin) .................55% Flint (silica) ..................................... .22%

Finally some glaze results from the work I have been posting about all summer. It took me a week to get around to taking pictures, because school started this week. As I was taking pictures I decided to test out the wares and see how well they worked. This is what I had for lunch today. It felt distinctly middle eastern. Some of the glazes came out better than others. The blue green seems to have done the best and the lavender the worst. I will need to use them on bisque that has been fired to the proper temperature before I decide which glazes I like best. The teapot looks good from the side, but it had some glaze crawling issues and pouring issues. It would seem that the spout is too long. This is how my first mishima attempt came out, I think I like the second one I did better (see below). I think this set is my favorite from what came out of the kiln.
